At Studio Hedg, we believe in creating buildings with purpose that enhance daily living and seamlessly integrate with their surroundings. This private residential project in Colchester, Essex, exemplifies our client-centred approach, as we guided our clients through a thoughtful blend of conversion and extension work, building upon an earlier garage conversion to create a more functional, comfortable, and inviting family home.

A significant aspect of this project involved addressing the challenges presented by existing extensions and the original garage structure. Our design focused on mindful contextual design, ensuring that all new additions were in keeping with the property’s established aesthetic, avoiding any obtrusive elements while significantly enhancing the living spaces.
Key Features & Design Approach – Embracing Studio Hedg’s Ethos
This project truly reflects our commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction alongside our dedication to building healthier homes. The core of our design revolved around maximising space and natural light, alongside improving the thermal performance and structural integrity of the property, aligning with our principles of the circular economy.

Expanded Living Spaces with Purpose: The kitchen was extended to the rear, creating an expansive new dining area. The existing office was also extended to align with the utility room, allowing for the reconfiguration of internal layouts. This clever redesign facilitated the creation of a master bedroom with a captivating window seat overlooking the garden, complemented by an en-suite bathroom accessible from both the utility room and the lounge – all designed for optimal functionality and comfort.
Harnessing Natural Light: We meticulously planned the structures to optimise natural light penetration. Extensive glazing in the side extension and strategically placed rooflights in the dining area extension flood the space with light, creating bright, airy, and welcoming spaces. This minimises the need for artificial lighting, promoting occupant well-being by aligning with circadian rhythms. The interplay of light and shadow, particularly from the skylights, adds a dynamic and engaging element to the interiors.
The Window Seat Oasis: A key feature of the master bedroom is the bespoke window seat, which offers a serene retreat. This carefully crafted element provides a peaceful spot for relaxation and reflection, offering an intimate connection with the garden and surrounding landscape, fostering a sense of well-being.

Prioritising Building Envelope Performance: During the construction phase, it was discovered that some existing walls lacked insulation and wall ties. In line with our commitment to enhancing building envelope performance and promoting circular economy principles, we have meticulously addressed these issues. We added insulation and wall ties to significantly improve the property’s U-Value and overall thermal performance, as well as enhancing structural integrity. Similarly, the original garage floor, found to be uninsulated and lower than the main house, was insulated to improve thermal performance and allow for seamless, step-free access into the new extension.

Outcome:
By sensitively extending and reconfiguring this property, we have created bright, welcoming spaces that seamlessly connect with the outdoors, providing a significantly improved and healthier living environment for our clients. This project stands as a testament to Studio Hedg’s dedication to innovative, sustainable, and client-focused architectural solutions.
